Discussion:
System failed to register pointer? (Event ID: 11160)

Even after typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command
prompt, the error does not go away. (See Event Description
below.)

Appreciate your help.
===================================================
Description:
The system failed to register pointer (PTR) resource
records (RRs) for network adapter
with settings:

Adapter Name : {xxxxx7-8xxF-4xxx-xxx09-Exxxx}
Host Name : mulan
Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : mwdoc.local
DNS server list :
192.168.0.30
Sent update to server : 192.175.48.1
IP Address : 192.168.0.44

The reason that the system could not register these RRs
was because of a security related
problem. The cause of this could be (a) your computer does
not have permissions to register
and update the specific DNS domain name set for this
adapter, or (b) there might have been
a problem negotiating valid credentials with the DNS
server during the processing of the
update request.

You can manually retry DNS registration of the network
adapter and its settings by typing
"ipconfig /registerdns" at the command prompt. If problems
still persist, contact your DNS
server or network systems administrator.

For more information, see Help and Support Center
at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I assume this server is not in your IP properties? If so, needs to be
removed. Any external DNS address should not exist in your IP properties.
Lot's of errors come about due to that.

If not listed, I would configure a forwarder to your ISP's DNS.

Are there multiple NICs on this machine?

We are having a similar proble where I work. The only
difference is that it states a <?> instead of any of our
DNS servers. This only happens on Windows 2003 Member
Servers and Windows XP SP1 Workstations. Our Windows
2000 SP3 Workstations all function correctly. Any help
would be appreciated! Our entry in event viewer is as
follows:

Start Event info
The system failed to register host (A) resource records
(RRs) for network adapter
with settings:

Adapter Name : {7C5F8225-DC14-4399-9D79-AF48F145B4DA}
Host Name : Bye
Primary Domain Suffix : local
DNS server list :
10.10.128.19, 10.10.128.2
Sent update to server : <?>
IP Address(es) :
10.10.135.244

The reason the system could not register these RRs was
because the DNS server contacted refused the update
request. The reasons for this might be (a) you are not
allowed to update the specified DNS domain name, or (b)
because the DNS server authoritative for this name does
not support the DNS dynamic update protocol.

To register the DNS host (A) resource records using the
specific DNS domain name and IP addresses for this
adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems
administrator.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

End Event Info

10.10.128.19 Is the First Domain Controller in the Forest
and 10.10.128.2 is the Second. Everything at this (root)
level points to 10.10.128.19 primary. We have a child
domain under the (root) local domain. The workstation
that this event came from is joined at the root level.

Thanks,

Dave

The domain name is a single label name. Numerous errors WILL occur from
that. SHould be inthe form of domain.local or whatever.local, but not just
"local". XP clients fail resolution with single label names.

So according to the error, the registration attempt was sent to:
10.10.135.244.
What machine is that and how is that referenced? Is it in the machine's IP
properties?
